NOWNESS: The White Buffalo’s Sleepy Little Town

At first, all I would listen to was country music. I saw Randy Travis, who I actually still kind of like now. And then I started getting really into the punk scene for a while. But I remember having a tape of Foster & Lloyd I’d be carrying around…I still love the old country music. I can’t really handle what’s going on now, because it’s not really country music. It’s more pop than pop music.

Mr. Jake Smith of The White Buffalo has hit the reasoning for my intense distaste in the current stream of country music right on the head: it’s not what it used to be, and it never will be. The country genre of today’s time lacks everything that made it what it is, and it’s downright embarrassing as a result. Believe me, I know—my childhood years consisted of so much twang, I’m surprised I didn’t adopt some sort of Texan accent.
Anyway, I just happened to come across Smith’s new single, Sleepy Little Town, on NOWNESS this morning, and almost instantly, I knew I had to say something about it. It’s been thrown around on this blog before, but I’ll say it again: I love a song that can flow on it’s own, and this is such a song. Nostalgic with a dash of romance, Smith’s voice caters to the purveyors of folk in us all, the nurturers of what music once was—simple, yet powerful in every respect of the word.
Smith’s debut, Once Upon a Time In the West, will be available through Unison Music on Feb. 28th (that’s tomorrow!). Until then, you can listen to Sleepy Little Town by clicking the link above. Enjoy.
